Scott Sainsbury
Scott is our very own Gascoigne, who, if fit and sober, can be a great asset to the team. He has scored some crucial goals and is often involved in some of the Vaders’ better attacking moves. Has a great presence on the pitch (much to the annoyance of the opposition, and most of the time the ref), he really likes to set the tone of the game not only with his feet but also with his mouth (he’s loud).
A great midfielder due to his composure, ability to keep hold of the ball and his passing, he is equally as effective at centre back where his calming influence helps the rest of the back four and his timely tackling and interceptions break up attacks quickly and easily. Has also been effective from the left of midfield – or his free role as he likes to call it.
Great positioning, awareness and technique means Scott doesn’t need to run himself ragged and this is probably a good thing, especially when he’s been out the night before. Everyone’s friend, one of the boys and always good for a laugh, Scott takes winning seriously and gave an inspired speech before the cup final which started along the lines of “I haven’t come all the way here today to lose to these p***ks”, whilst foaming at the mouth. Only one thing left to say… Make some noise for the Vader boys, boom, boom… you know the rest.

Player Profile: Jason Cook

Jason Cook
After watching the Vaders in the Cup Final in season 2, Cookie wanted to sign up immediately for the start of the new season. A relatively unknown quantity for the Vaders due to being a new signing, although quite a few have played alongside Cookie in the past for other local teams.
A well known professional boxer (former European champ), Cookie has a great engine and even better enthusiasm to do well. Will chase the ball endlessly and is not afraid to mix it up (as you’d imagine), could be an interesting season with Cookie in the team. I’m sure there’ll be some laughs and hand-over-mouth moments.
Started season 3 in goals and did very well (saving a penalty too), it remains to be seen if he’ll be content to play there all season and if he does, I’m sure we’ll see some awesome ‘The monk’ moments. PS Aaaadrieeeeeene!!

Player Profile: Tom Evans

Tom Evans
Tom has shown remarkable commitment to the Vaders having found it difficult to hold down a regular place in the side despite being ever-present almost every training session and match day. It’s not down to his abilities though, he is more than capable and has shown glimpses in a number of games like scoring the winner against local rivals St Pats, but has been unlucky with the depth in the squad in his chosen position.
Sometimes asked to play in a defensive role he looks a little uncomfortable with, Tom excels on either wing and is equally as good in the centre. Could find himself with more minutes on the pitch this season if he can replicate the form he shows in training every week during matches, then he will only be getting dropped on nights out rather than the team sheet.
Strong as an ox (roider), good feet and a good passer of the ball, Tom needs just a little more confidence and will only get this from playing more. His reputation as party boy may be curbed a little lately and playing for Maesteg Park will help him get even better too. Training’s top goalscorer (or so he says?).

Player Profile: Christian Powys

Christian Powys
When Powys joined the Vaders at the very beginning he and everyone else was unsure what position he would occupy. After trying the wing, midfield and full back, he finally settled in as centre back and has been there ever since. Very quiet, after a while he decided to start talking, and once he grew in confidence he got better and better each game, culminating in winning a deserved Player of the Year award for 2011/12.
Works well alongside a ‘talker’ in the back like Cwtch or Sainsbury, he makes tackle after tackle, clearance after clearance, and also has the composure to pick out a nice pass from defence. Suffered with a couple of niggling injuries, the Vaders will be hoping he can stay fit throughout the season to provide the stability needed at the back.
Tall, fast and a great tackler, Powys, despite being a very quiet individual, has a competitive streak inside which allows him to perform at his best almost every week. And he sure does put up a great net. Powys is simply a Vaders’ Vader. Finally, knowing how much he’d like the boys to stop talking about it, there will be no mention of his penis on here. Oh wait…

Player Profile: Matthew James

Matthew James
Matthew ‘Titch’ James is the Vaders all time leading goalscorer and has been a permanent feature of the front line since the first ever Vaders game. Has established a lethal striking partnership with Ieuan Morris but has the ability to play alongside anyone.
He probably doesn’t pass enough, doesn’t train often enough and has a little pout now and then but is always good for a goal, no matter how well he’s playing. Has tried his hand at right back and midfield in some games, whilst also expressing a strange desire to play centre back or goalkeeper, but everyone knows, including himself, that the Vaders need him leading the line.
Skillful, deadly in front of goal and not afraid to mix it despite his size, his hard work and constant running sometimes goes under-appreciated, and can unfairly miss out on Man of the Match votes due to the expectation of him to score goals no matter what. There’s no danger of us allowing him to play in goal, but look out for him topping the scoring charts again this season.
